Chance for Harvard SCEA? Will chance back!

collegeluva101collegeluva101 28 replies3 discussions
Oh, yes, it's another one of those....;) Hello, all! I was wondering if you all could chance me for Harvard. I might be applying SCEA and I just wanted to know what my chances are. Thank you!

Grade: 11
Class Rank: School does not rank
GPA: 4.65 (weighted), school only sends weighted
SAT: I took them yesterday, so my results are not available until May 23, but I received a 2100 on a diagnostic test for a prep class that is supposed to improve your score by 100-200 points, to give you an indication of how I will perform.

Freshman Course Load: hardest possible
Sophomore Course Load: hardest possible
Junior Course Load: Full IB Diploma
Senior Course Load: Full IB Diploma

Clubs:
-Key Club (3 years, Lieutenant Governor of my division, previously a club committee chair)
-Model United Nations (3 years, maybe head delegate senior year)
-Latin Club (3 years, co-president for 2 years)
-National Honor Society (1 year, recently elected president)
-Science Club (2 years)

Sports:
-Varsity Basketball (3 years)
-Varsity Track and Field (2 years)

Volunteer Work:
-Tutor children at homeless shelter (3 years)
-Volunteer at hospital (recent)

Research:
-1-month-long paid internship at Harvard lab last summer about diabetes. I will be returning this summer for 2 months.

Awards:
-small school awards (Science Student of the Month, etc.)
-National Latin Exam and National Spanish Exam awards
-215 on my PSAT score, so I will hopefully be a National Merit Commended Scholar and National Achievement Semifinalist.

Basic Info:
-Ethnicity: African American
-Gender: Female
-Family Income: ~$110,000 (will be decreasing soon when my mother goes back to school)

I apologize if this is an excessive amount of information. I would just really like to know what are the basic things I can do (besides write a super awesome essay, which is in the works) to improve my chances of getting into Harvard.

EDIT: My NHS presidency was taken away because of a recent rule that my school added. I could not be angrier...

    @temerity, Thanks!

You look to be in great shape! The research is huge and very impressive. I would say maybe to try to ACT if you aren't totally satisfied with your SAT score, since different people perform better on certain tests. Good luck!

    Chance me back?

Oh no! I'm sorry about your NHS presidency being revoked. You're right to be angry.
I think you have a fairly good chance at Harvard, especially since you're a URM and you have good hooks. Applying SCEA could help your chances. I'd say go for it!

@kitts95, Thanks! I think I might take the ACT if I'm not happy with the SAT results I get on May 23. Also, I chanced you back!

@thelemonisinplay, It is really frustrating, but I'm trying to just get over it. Thanks for the encouragement!

Varsity sports, URM, intensive class rigor, and a solid GPA...that's awesome. However, your potential 2100 seems to be the only flaw (at least on a Harvard-bound application). If you were to shoot for a 2250+ and maybe even try to hold some form of leadership position in sports, you have as good a shot as any. However, its Harvard.

Whether you get in there or not, I could say with relative confidence that you could get into *at least* 1 ivy school.

@ccjunior1, Thanks, I'm really hoping for at least a 2200 on the SAT I just took. If not, then I will def. be retaking the test in October. Also, I chanced you back!

I'm 90% certain you're in: Female for STEM , URM, Good ECs and Good grades. If only you could bump up your SATs to 2200+

@LineOfView, Thanks! The 2100 was just a diagnostic. I took the May one for real for the first time and I'm really hoping I get a 2200+. If not, I'll be retaking it in October.

Just . . . no. With all due respect, it is basically impossible to give accurate chances for schools as competitive as Harvard, even for the best applicants. At most, we can only say if an applicant is competitive or not, and even then, our ability to do that (since most of us are still in high school) is questionable. Harvard (and, for that matter, the majority of very competitive colleges) should be considered a high reach for just about anybody.

With that said, OP, you will be a very competitive applicant.

    Best of luck!

Thanks fire chancing me by the way!!! And I think that all of your stats give you a great chance of being accepted, but the fact you are a minority puts you above and beyond!!! I say you have a god chance for all of them! Good luck!

WOW! I feel so inadequate compared to you! Haha :P Anyways, you look to be in tip top shape. The fact that you've researched at Harvard shows you have an "in." You'll come to find in this world it not what you know, but WHO you know. This summer, when you're there for two months, really try to branch out and network across campus. Work with a professor? Get close to him and he'll write a superb letter of recommendation. Try to network as best as you can.

All I can really say is to possibly try the ACT and see how you do - many do better on the ACT than the SAT. You're academics, EC load, and sports show you're a fantastically well rounded person and the perfect Harvard candidate.

Oh you're African American? Harvard will jump at you! I can confidently say you're 80% of the way there as long as you don't **** up senior year! No pressure!

    Good luck man!

@Nautical52, Thanks! I'll def. be getting my additional rec. from my research mentor of two years. I'm also going to be trying to get published in a scientific journal, though that will be harder, lol. I might take the ACTs, though they're the day after my prom, lol, so I would take them next year. But thank you!
