...okay this is part 4...last one....It's a mind-boggling process, the academic application/aritistic audition deal---and really it's a crap shoot at the end of the day in terms of making a particular school's final "cut." Do what you're doing which is getting a good feel now for prioritizing what's important to your D in a school/location/program and visit those schools on her list that make sense. As far as your timeframe for potentially being around Ithaca--I know their musical "Baby" goes up April 19th and closes April 30th. Ithaca the town is such a great college town, especially in fall/summer/spring! I can elaborate way way more on specific schools if you like later, but for now, good luck!January 2011
...For D she was most keen on the acting training and knowing she would get private voice lessons as well as plenty of MT later in the curriculum as well as non-intimidating dance classes where she will grow into a better "mover" than she is presently....she will never be featured in Chorus Line or Chicago for her dance that's for sure! (IC fits her wonderfully). And D has plenty of incredible dancers in her class/at her school who I expect get challenged in other classes. But to my knowledge classes aren't leveled first year. In the end for D, the strong academics of NYU, Elon, and Mich were initially of big appeal, but didn't matter when she didn't get accepted artistically at Elon and Mich. At the end she visited both NYU and IC as an accepted student and although being in the first NYU New Studio on B'way class was tempting, it wasn't her best fit...Ithaca was. And I'm happy to say, one semester in, it seems the right choice.January 2011
...D auditioned for Elon on campus (late October---her 2nd audition, Elon's first) and Michigan on campus (mid Nov--Michigan's first) and had to do Syracuse by video as her original DC audition conflicted with YoungArts week in January last year. D got into IC, NYU and 4 others programs not on your D's list thus far (SMU BFA Acting; Miami BFA MT; Oklahoma BFA MT; UNC Greeley BA MT); She also auditioned for CCM but didn't get in; I will be happy to elaborate more on any of these schools if relevant to you; I will say my D is actress first, vocalist close second and dancer a distant distant third as she had no training prior to auditioning---I feel like this was only a factor with Elon and Michigan and CCM. And the only two schools she would deem "well if I had known that about them I wouldn't have auditioned for them" would be CCM and Miami....not good fits for her personally.January 2011
lkornfield--this is a very long response so I am cutting it into 3 responses as apparently one is limited to 1000 characters!
-AT Ithaca D has 8 other girls in her MT class (she makes 9) and 4 boys....I think 12-14 total in class is what they aim for each year. I think it's more like 20 (10/10) in the freshman BFA Acting class. These kids are from all over with a large contingent from New Eng area (PA, NY, NJ, CT) for sure and for some reason, tons from CO (my state), CA and WA...I have been pleasantly surprised at how well D has adjusted to the colder weather; of course having 5 weeks off for the holidays between semesters helps! D auditioned for IC at Chicago Unifieds (Carnegie Mellon and NYU too as they audition near Unifieds although not as part of them officially);January 2011
Thank you nobusiness- yes, Ithaca is one of her top choices at the moment. Would you mind telling me how many girls are in your daughters class? All her top choices are so very very competitive- it's a little scary! We are going to visit ithaca over spring break - probably on April 18th or 19th - maybe she will meet your daughter! We are also planning on visiting Syracuse, muhlenberg, u of arts, and Penn state on the trip. Maybe Emerson as well although I don't love the idea of a cut program. Would love any incites you have on Ithaca or any of the other schools we will be visiting. We live in CA so I'm trying to be very picky about where we visit. Thanks!January 2011
