    Hello again,
Maybe I have placed my recently posted thread at the wrong sub-forum.
What if i want to move my recently posted thread to the 'Engineering Majors' sub-forum? Thanks

Hello, I posted a new thread a few hours ago and saw a red star appearing beside my username. SInce I have not noticed any reply so far, I am wondering whether there is something wrong related to this. Thank you.

Hello, this is usmurica. I messaged you earlier. Every single post on that account was productive, and I did not once post in 'College Admissions' with that account.

However, I was banned for "having multi accounts," which is in itself an erroneous charge. The very first time I should not have been banned because my message was definitely misread. And the second time I was trying to clarify the first time, but I was banned for being a troll.

If you view the posts on my 'usmurica' account, everything was evidence that I was being a participating member of this community. But one "College Admissions" moderator is simply holding onto a grudge against me for their mistake.

I would appreciate it if you could help.

Hi Mollie! You had sent me a private message but I don't have 15 posts so it won't let me message you back. You had messaged me about the HDRB concentration at Harvard. I would really like the contact information of the neurobiology concentrator in your lab. It would definitely be very helpful. Thanks!

My daughter didn't get into Stanford and now hopes to go there for grad school for neuroscience. She has 2 years of behavioral research experience with the psychology department and has coauthored posters. She prefers molecular research and wonders if she should contact other departments for opportunities. While in hs, she attended the Vanderbilt summer research (neuroscience) and the University of Texas (nanotechnology) research programs. Her grade point is a 3.5. What do you advise she do to improve her chances of getting accepted in Stanford?

    Mollie,
In the mid 70's, I walked into Dr. Robert Gould's office for a 15min. appointment and it lasted over an hour. I felt I made a real friend. Over the years, I lost track of him and was wondering if he's still around...

Hey Mollie. I'm an international student and I've participated in the AMC, but failed to get through the first stage. Should I mention that I participate in the competition, or will my loss hurt my MIT application? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Mollie,
I currently work for a telecom vendor in India. I am interested in pursuing my masters degree in communication systems at the MIT (EECS). I have authored papers that were presented at national level symposiums in India, but none of them have been published in any journal. What are the chances that I can make it to the EECS Dept @ MIT? Also please tell me about the chance of funding.

    Dear molliebatmit,

Im an international student from Australia and I have just received my testing score of 91 for TOEFL. I feel that I did not perform at my best. If I were to sit another TOEFL examination on the 11th of feb, would there be a chance that the new score will be taken into account?

PS just out of curiousity, is does anyone even get accepted with TOEFL <100?

    Thanks in advance,

    Hey Mollie,

I am an international student. In my O levels I took 10 subjects in a sitting. I got 8 As but got a C in English and a B in Accounting. Having repeated, I got an A in accounting and a B in English. I'm applying to MIT this year. Since MIT says they consider either TOEFL/SAT as their English Proficiency test for international students, do you think my O levels results would have a negative impact on my admission chances any how?

    Hi molliebatmit,

I'm Noon, a student from Thailand. I just got waitlisted from MIT, and I really don't know what to do. Since you know a lot about the institute, it would be greatly appreciated if you could give me some advice. I don't really understand how the waitlist process works; do they go through the whole admission process again after they find out how many free spots there are? How much interest do I have to show them? I'm sure that most waitlisted students will send updates and new grades to the admission office. Is that enough? Do I have to something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azEXrtWlR14 , to be able to get it? I'm pretty confused right now.

Thank you very much for you help!

    Hey Mollie,

Since you were giving advice about quality of program vs. quality of PI, I thought I would ask your advice.

Currently, I am a first year MS student at a tier 2 university (Old Dominion Univ). I have been offered a PhD position in a well-known PI's lab. She has had positions at top 10 universities before coming to my university. If I choose to accept this position I would transfer out of the masters degree next year into the PhD with all my coursework satisfied. My ultimate goal is to get a position with CDC or at a biotech company. I'm not really a competitive person, I would just like to have a good job after school.
My question to you is, should I finish my MS and apply to a PhD program at a higher ranked university or accept a position at my current university and hope for a top-notch postdoc?

    I really appreciate your help!

Hi molliebat. You seem to be the resident guru when it comes to everything MIT, so I was wondering whether you could offer your advice on a (small) issue which has being plaguing me for the past week:
In my statement of objectives for grad school I am not sure whether to mention the fact that I recently started collaborating on a small project with some grad students at the very MIT lab I would like to work at (basically they are running an experiment I suggested). If I mention it I sound like I'm trying to jump the gun, if I don't I feel I might be short selling myself..

Any advice? (I need to get this resolved asap, the deadline is in 10 days)

molliebatmit, would you be willing to read my common app essay and comment over it for me? With it, I am applying to Harvard, University of Michigan-Ann Harbor, and University of California-Berkeley.

    Hey Mollie!

I'll try to keep this quick! I'm currently a freshman studying engineering in Canada and I'm hoping to get into the mechanical engineering branch by second year. I would really really love to go to MIT for grad school (for the aero-astro program) and I know that the admissions decisions are heavily based on the research experience. I also know that MIT tends to prefer their own undergrads over other undergrads for their grad programs. My question is, how can make myself a competitive candidate when I don't know any MIT professors personally? Thank you!

    Hi Mollie!
I am applying EA to MIT and I would really like to continue researching neuroscience at the cellular level (I spent my past two summers studying ligand gated ion channels). Should I contact a professor now or does it make sense to wait and find out if I will actually get into MIT? Also, if I am talking about my research in the significant challenge essay, is it ok to also write an optional essay about my research experience as a whole?
By the way, what was your experience like in BCS at MIT?

    Thank You,

    Sarah

Hi, are you Mollie as in Mollie the one profiled on the The Secret Life of Scientists & Engineers series? This is a random guess but I connected Mollie and MIT. I was watching that the other day and I was really inspired because, well, if you are that Mollie, I want to be doing exactly what you are doing right now! That's pretty much it.
