When should i travel to Montreal?

I recently got accepted to the B Sci program for Maths at McGill University. I'm very happy about that announcement.

However, what concerns me right now is when should i travel to Montreal (i'm an international student coming from South America). Is it necessary to be there at an specific date in order to pick up documents or forms? On the other hand, if that isn't required, when should i travel to Montreal in order to get used to the city and such?

Other doubts that I have are the following: If i'm going to live with a relative, is it compulsory to be in one of the residences? On the other hand, is the meal plan obligatory if i'm not staying at one of the McGill residences?

Thank you for answering my doubts.
