I just looked at my test credits on OneStart and it says the following

ACT Math 33 Math-M 199Ex 0 units Transfer

What does this mean and what is Math-M199?

thanks

It means you are eligible to take 100-level math classes such as M118 Finite and M119 Calculus. You don't have to start with math M0-- classes, which are "remedial" and for which you don't get college credit. Some people have to take the remedial classes before they can take M118, M119, etc.

Thank you bthomp1..I also took my foreign language test online yesterday and today the following is posted:

    684.00 HISP-S 250EX 0.00 units T

Does this mean I tested out of the first two years of Spanish? or do I have to take HISP-S 250EX to receive credit? I thought I would receive some credits for this but it says 0 units.

Will this satisfy my general ed requirement for foreign language/world history?

Just received a private message saying that since I took the foreign language placement exam online I will not receive any credit? To receive credit you have to take it on campus. I did not think I had an option. Is this correct?

HISP-S 250EX means that you tested beyond HISP-S 250. So if you take the fifth-semester Spanish class, S280, and get a C or better, you will get six free credits total for HISP-S 200 and HISP-S 250. Since the placement test is now online, I am guessing that IU may no longer automatically give you four credits for HISP-S 150 if you test into second-year Spanish. They did give four credits when the test was done in-person oncampus. Maybe they don't now, since it would be easy to cheat on the online test and test out of first year Spanish, take the four credits, and then don't take any Spanish classes at all at IU. Not that anybody would actually do that . . .

Looking at the Spanish Department website, I see that they don't mention placement testing credit for S150, so they may have done away with granting four credits for first-year Spanish. They don't give credit for S150 for AP scores per this table, so I guess they did away with automatic credit for first year:
Advanced Placement Exams: Admission Standards: Future Freshmen: How to Apply: Office of Admissions: Indiana University Bloomington

In any case, if you take S280 and get the C or better, you will get 9 credits total, which is a good deal for taking just one class:

    S200 3 cr.
    S250 3 cr.
    S280 3 cr.

Undergraduate Studies: Department of Spanish and Portuguese

You can also take S250 if you want, but then you would only get 6 credits total for Spanish (assuming that they no longer give four credits for first-year Spanish through the placement test). 684 is a really good score for the placement test, so you probably would not have any trouble with S280. Congrats on you great score!

Honestly I found the test/vocab very hard. I have no idea how I tested so high. I took three years of HS Spanish and I live in an area that Spanish is spoken all the time but there is no way I can take Spanish 250 or 280 and do well. I still think taking the world history classes is the way to go for me. Thanks for your input.

Anyone know if a 35 on the english section of the ACT gets me out of anything? I know at another school I was thinking about I would have gotten credit for that. Anything similar at IU? Sorry to hijack the thread.

Evilcow, if you took the SAT and got a 660 on the SAT writing section, then, that score along with your 35 ACT English score, earns you two credits for W143. If you haven't taken the SAT, it might be worth taking just to get the two free credits, especially if you are an OOS student.

Beststudent check your test scores again. Guess there was a glitch because now it says I tested out of first two classes of Spanish. Makes way more sense since I thought the Spanish test was pretty hard

bthomp1 you are correct. I just got off the phone with Spanish Dept and things have changed as of Summer 2013. You no longer can get credit for Spanish 150. In order to get any credit you have to take the Spanish class you tested into.
