I just read a piece from Penn that they are one of the very few universities that still is offering financial aid that does not require use of loans. Many other schools tried that policy before the Great Recession, but then backtracked. When students were comparing financial aid offers this year, that may have been a deal-breaker.

(Personally, I think universities should expect students to take out a reasonable amount of government-subsidized loans - the students should have some "skin in the game." )

Charlie, I agree with you in general, but for kids from families with the lowest of incomes, not only will their families be unable to help them, but the college student may be helping his family, over the summer, etc.

I thought I posted this yesterday, but I guess I didn't hit the post button.
This was posted by a student on the Cornell forum:
I called the engineering admissions office yesterday and they said that they were very likely going to go to the waitlist this year.

Turns out they did, because I miraculously got off the engineering waitlist today. There is hope! Good luck!

This is why I started this thread again this year. If you are interested in getting off the WL, now is the time to call, especially if your school is going to its WL.

If you did not get off the priority wait list for CMU on May 7, the deadline for the "normal" wait list is now June 1.

You probably don't need to post the "no" schools.
