Does participation in competitions matter if you don't win anything?

Just had a quick question (see title). For example, I entered my regional science fair but didn't win awards, and I entered the Siemens Competition in Math Science and Technology but didn't win anything either. Should these even be mentioned on a college app?

Thanks.

Honorable mentions count. If it is something like a county science fair that can count too. If it relates to your major it wouldn't hurt to put it down in your ecs (ex: participant in county-wide creative writing competition-for an English major; or participant in annual state engineering competition). As far as I am concerned, participating in extra curricular competitions counts-just make sure you state participant-don't want to fib.

    Best of luck!
