Babson College Scholar's Choice

emotionpreludeemotionprelude 3 replies4 discussions
I've got an e-mail today from Babson College.
They were notifying me that I automatically became their candidate for their Scholar's Choice application. I have no idea what it really is, as well as why I became the candidate when I didn't make any appeal to show my interest in the college.

Any idea what this scholarship really is? Thank you.

The scholars choice application is a marketing tactic. It means if you apply you will be considered for a scholarship not that you will necessarily get one, which is true of everyone who applies. These go out usually based on SAT or ACT scores -- unless you opt out of sharing, the testing agencies provide colleges with ranges of test scores and long lists of persons who scored within that range and the colleges use those for marketing purposes.

Ah dang, I got something just like this. I got a PSAT of a 212 and my recent SAT was a 2250. Thought it actually meant something. Too bad. I'm definitely thinking of applying to Babson though so maybe it'll help that I got nominated for this? Y/N

I don't think the scholars choice designation carries that much weight, but it most certainly doesn't hurt. It is primarily a marketing technique. Also, because you received the designation, it means that you are on their mailing list. The fact that you are on their mailing list shows the college that you are interested, and demonstrated interest has a lot of weight during the admissions process.

I got the same message when I was a junior last year. It doesn't mean that much except that Babson thinks your scores are competitive for their school and therefore applying to Babson would be a good idea. (With those SAT scores I wouldn't be surprised if you do get a scholarship at Babson though as long as your GPA and the rest of your app is solid)

I was wondering the same thing. Received this about my DD, she was thinking that Babson would be a reach for her, but even without a scholarship if she could get accepted, this is a nice signal
